Where to Find Your Tesla VIN
Learn the easiest places to find a Tesla VIN on the car, in the Tesla app, on registration paperwork, and in ownership documents.
Fastest places to check
Tesla VINs are usually easiest to find before you even open a door. Start with the places that do not require tools or service access.
- Look through the lower driver-side windshield from outside the vehicle.
- Open the Tesla app and check vehicle details or account documents.
- Check registration, insurance, title, purchase, or lease paperwork.
- Open the driver door and inspect the door jamb certification label.
Why the same VIN appears in several places
A VIN is the permanent vehicle identifier, so it appears on physical labels, ownership documents, and digital account records. If one source is hard to read, compare it with another source before decoding or sharing it.
Before you decode it
A complete VIN is 17 characters. VINs do not use I, O, or Q because they can be confused with 1 and 0.
Can I find my Tesla VIN without going to the car?
Yes. The Tesla app, account documents, insurance paperwork, title, registration, or purchase agreement often include the full VIN.
Is the windshield VIN enough to decode the car?
Yes, as long as all 17 characters are visible. If glare or dirt makes a character unclear, compare it with paperwork or the Tesla app.
